This listing is for one pound of UV fluorescent rough from the world famous zinc mine in Ogdensburg, NJ, "The Sterling Hill Mine". The ore you will receive will be a mixture of both calcite and willemite. The calcite will
fluoresce an orange color, while the willemite produces a lively neon green. You will need a 254nm short-wave lamp to view these colors.

We do sell an entry-level (4w 254nm) short-wave handheld lamp as well. Keep in mind this is an entry-level lamp and is rated at only 4w. The higher the wattage, the brighter the fluorescence will show. The pictures in this listing were taken using this lamp. Good short wave lamps can get very pricey, due to the required filtering that is required on the lamp to block out the appropriate light for the rocks to fluoresce. The lamp we sell is good to show off the fluorescence in a classroom setting for a short period and NOT for a permanent home display setting or fieldwork.

NOTE: Protective eyewear is always recommended when using a short wave lamp.

In most cases, the emitted light has a longer wavelength, and therefore lower energy, than the absorbed radiation. The most striking example of fluorescence occurs when the absorbed radiation is in the ultraviolet region of the spectrum, and thus invisible to the human eye, while the emitted light is in the visible region, which gives the fluorescent substance a distinct color that can be seen only when exposed to UV light. Fluorescent materials cease to glow nearly immediately when the radiation source stops, unlike phosphorescent materials, which continue to emit light for some time after.

Nice collection, with nearly all the rocks containing several minerals that fluoresce pink and green under short wave (254 nm) uv. The short wave lamp is nice to have and compliments the long wave lamp and long wave fluorescent rock I already had (e.g. Yooperlite). Arrived in a few business days after ordering, happy with it all.

I ordered the Fluorescent Rough (Calcite - Willemite) and the pieces were nice sizes but the lamp that came with it is a piece of junk. It is not worth paying for it. It broke the first day I had it and it eats up the batteries really fast. I was really dissapointed with it. The stones were very nice though.
